The book won't be perfect for everyone and it wasn't for me. For example it assumes a knowledge of some graphical terms and Adobe Illustrator menus which proved frustrating in a couple of places.
The author is clearly a talented artist/designer and we are treated to some wonderful drawings in almost every chapter- but he is also exceptionally knowledgeable about a wide variety of topics not directly related to design. For example there are frequent tips on how to design in a way to keep a whole development team happy.
I Would love to have the author design my layouts but I am sure I couldn't afford him- but that's why I read the book. Throughout there are exceptional uses of references for further study and I probably doubled the number of bookmarks in my 'dev' folder in Firefox while reading.
Did you know over 15% of your users are left handed or that over 20% have some kind of sight deficiency? Or that a disabled player is much more likely to be a 'serious' mobile gamer? These and other priceless one liners as well as deep analysis and explanation abound. Not just about iPhone games. It ably covers the fundamentals including why and how board games and card games work and are fun/satisfying to play. The book could easily have dropped the ios label and been a more general coverage of games.
But there is very detailed coverage of all things ios from icon specs to screen densities and sprite sheets. So the ios label is justified, just saying it is rich enough to appeal to anyone designing games.
Chapter 6 alone was worth the price of the book. With a detailed break down on how to design game characters. How do you make them cute, scary, etc. And more interestingly, why do our brains perceive them as such? If you are serious about design or you just want to constantly improve your apps, on any platform then this book and its sources will help you build an enormous todo list.
With constant fascinating references to cinema, human instinct(seriously) and the art world in general, this was one of the most interesting tech' books I have read in a year. And I do get through a few.
